Finnish nuclear waste management company Posiva Oy has signed a contract with construction company YIT Rakennus Oy for the next excavation project in the Onkalo underground bedrock research facility at Olkiluoto. Under the project – set to start next month and to take ten months to complete – YIT will excavate an access tunnel to the area where the final disposal of used fuel will take place, as well as a maintenance and parking garage some 430-440 metres below ground.
