Re. Higgins Protests Planned Nuclear Waste Shipments (January 2016)

Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo, has gone to the floor of the House of Representatives to protest the U.S. Department of Energy’s refusal to do an environment review or threat assessment for its plans to ship nuclear waste over the Peace Bridge and through Western New York. The House, by a vote of 416-0, passed a bill sponsored by Higgins last fall calling for the review.

“And yet the Department of Energy announced that it intends to ignore the clear will of this House and authorize 150 truck shipments this year without the threat assessment the House demanded,” Higgins declared.

Higgins said he also has sent a letter to the Energy Secretary on the issue. Under the DOE plan, highly enriched liquid uranium would be transported from a nuclear facility in Chalk River, Ont., to the DOE’s Savannah River Site in South Carolina.
