Public debate set for Ontario’s underground nuclear waste facility (June 2014)

Jun 10, 2014 – The public and project proponents are getting a second chance to weigh-in on a proposal by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to build a facility that would store radioactive waste deep underground at its Bruce Nuclear site.

The September 9, 2014 public meeting in Kincardine, Ontario, will give OPG and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission the opportunity to provide their views in relation to the subjects of information requests issued since November 2013.

The facility is proposed for the shore of Lake Huron, where it would manage low- and intermediate-level waste produced from the continued operation of OPG-owned nuclear generations in Bruce, Pickering and Darlington, Ontario. Low-level radioactive waste could be industrial items contaminated during routine clean up, while intermediate-level radioactive waste could be used nuclear reactor components, ion-exchange resins, or filters used to purify reactor systems. Spent nuclear fuel would not be stored in the repository.

There are six priority items on the agenda for the public meeting, according to Ontarios Joint Review Panel for the Deep Geologic Repository Project for Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste. The meeting will examine the methodology used to determine the significance of adverse environmental effects from the waste storage; the updates to the geoscientific verification plan; the projects expansion plans; the risk analysis of using alternative means for the project; implications of revisions to the reference waste inventory; the implications of recent incidents at New Mexicos Waste Isolation Pilot Plant to the safety case for the OPG project.

The additional public hearing days are set to begin on September 9, 2014at9 a.m. The hearing will continue over approximately two weeks and will be held at: the Royal Canadian Legion, 219 Lambton Street, Kincardine, Ontario.
