Jiji Press – A task force of the industry ministry broadly approved a plan on Wednesday to compile support measures for municipalities to host final disposal sites for highly radioactive wastes from spent fuel from nuclear power plants.
The plan was included in an interim draft adopted at the days meeting. The task force, made up of private-sector experts, also asked the central government to take the lead in explaining the final disposal program to residents and other stakeholders when selecting host municipalities and to provide economic assistance to selected municipalities, including support for job creation. The working group plans to submit its proposals to the government as early as mid-May.
Since 2002, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan has sought municipalities interested in taking qualification checks to host sites for burying nuclear waste deep underground, but no progress has been made in the process of selecting the hosts.
