CLINTON – Central Huron is preparing to forge ahead in its quest to see whether the municipality could potentially be home to a deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel.
At a committee-of-the-whole session July 26, councillors passed a resolution asking the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) to screen Central Huron in order to ascertain whether it is has the proper resources to host such a facility.
While there was no debate about the resolution, Coun. Brian Barnim, who originally pitched the idea, spelled out that the move does not commit Central Huron to the project. He adds the screening process could eliminate the municipality as a potential location for a repository.
