Wawa Takes Next Step In NWMO Site Selection Process

The Municipality of Wawa has decided to continue learning about Canada’s plan for managing used nuclear fuel over the long term. Council passed a motion at its December 13th meeting expressing interest in moving forward to Step three, (Preliminary Assessment of Potential Feasibility- Feasibility) in the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s (NWMO) siting process. Step three will assess, in a preliminary way, whether Wawa has the potential to advance and meet the detailed requirements for the repository project. The siting process sets out to identify an informed and willing community to host a deep geological repository subject to all necessary regulatory approvals.
The decision does not commit the Municipality to becoming a host community. The NWMO site selection process is expected to take seven to ten years. The facility is not expected to be in operation until 2035 at the earliest. …
